                                Make a Hollyhock Doll

If you have hollyhocks growing in your summer garden:

  1. Pick an opened hollyhock flower with a quarter-inch stem and also pick a tight flower bud.
  2. Place the opened hollyhock flower on a flat surface, stem up.
  3. Take the flower bud (the doll's head) and gently push it, rounded end down, onto the small stem (the doll's body) of the opened flower (the skirt).
  4. Peel away the green covering that encloses the bud. Stop when you reach the petals.
     
If you have tissue paper (or origami paper) and lollipops:

  1. Cut paper into circles or squares about 6" across.
  2. Center the paper on top of the lollipop and fold around the candy part.
  3. Twist the paper around the stick and secure with a piece of string, ribbon, or pipecleaner.
  4. Draw a face on your doll and use the lollipop stick to twirl her around.

Write the kind of song you think Priscilla might have sung to herself while she was lying on the quilt in the attic at night. Once she went to live with the Silkwoods, how might her song have changed? Would the songs have sounded happy or sad?
